With the rise in tourism in the Lake Natron area locally run campsites have popped up in the town of Engare Sero. Lanjoo is the Assistant Manager of the Moivaro Natron Camp in Engare Sero, a campsite where tourists can either camp themselves or stay in permanent tents nestled in thick woods that are home to playful black-faced vervet monkeys. Assistant Manager for the last year and a half, Lanjoo has felt the benefits of tourism directly – he is able to support his family, buy cattle, and perhaps most importantly, learn about his legal rights. Now, Lanjoo is a village councilor for Engare Sero and is tasked with how income produced by the tourism industry should be used within the community. So far a new primary and secondary school have been built along with water projects and local employment schemes – for example, every staff member of Moivaro Natron camp is Maasai, including Lanjoo, from Engare Sero.
