Many tourists who visit Tanzania want to make a community development donation before they leave the country. The HGF allows tourists to quickly make a donation to any one of Honeyguide’s projects they want to when staying at certain camps and lodges in these community areas. We have Travelers’ Philanthropy projects in each of the communities in which we work.
Matemwe:
At HGF we have a goal to ensure that all members of the community sleep under mosquito nets by the year 2011. The project started with HGF donating 150 nets and about 350 more nets are needed to complete our goal. We also support the local football teams by providing them with new gear and practice materials when they assist in picking up trash from the village. Watch our YouTube video of the Matemwe football teams play against each other. In addition to this we also have a Green Turtle project on the island that tourists can donate to. Since its conception in 1992 the project has helped over 40,000 baby turtles make it into the ocean. Meet the volunteer of this project – Chiroko >
Machochwe:
So far through our Travelers’ Philanthropy program, tourist donations have provided the Machochwe primary and secondary school with water tanks, laboratory equipment for the school’s science department, and concrete for the construction of a new classroom building. As the only NGO giving aid to the school, the Headmaster, Mr. Epifan is grateful for our support.
Piyaya, Pinyinyi, Engaresero, Arash:
HGF Travelers’ Philanthropy project is responsible for the building and upkeep of a kindergarten in the village of Piyaya. And now with the first student from Piyaya at university in Iringa, Tanzania, many more parents are sending their children to school. Travelers can donate to this kindergarten or any primary or secondary school of their choice in the area.
