Two decades ago tourism was practically non-existent in Matemwe. But gradually over the last 20 years, hotels have popped up along the beach and westerners in search of perfect sand and snorkel have come to enjoy the white beaches, delicious seafood, and friendly atmosphere. With this increase in people there has also been a drastic increase in rubbish and non-biodegradable items thrown away by both the tourism industry and locals. Plastic bottles, washing detergent packets and plastic bags have become so prevalent in the community it threatens to stem the nascent tourism industry. The Honeyguide Foundation is proactively combating the accumulation of trash in the village by linking up with local trash collectors, schools, and the local football teams of Matemwe. The overarching mission is safeguarding the natural habitat by keeping the community and beach clean; this will also help sustain the rise of tourism in the area.
The brunt of the HGF waste management project is focused on responsible trash collection and rubbish separation. Currently, the Honeyguide Foundation is working in tandem with the local trash collectors to ensure proper weekly pickup of trash from the community and separation of plastics and recyclables from organic material once at the dump site.

Teams collect rubbish from the beach
On another front, the HGF has supplied seven 1,000L tanks to hold community collected trash which are emptied weekly by the local trash collectors, employed a member of the community to help maintain the area, started a competition between the two local football teams in the area to see which team can collect the most rubbish, and has initiated a school campaign to teach the value of proper trash disposal and protection of the environment.
We also have Upcoming Projects like creating a Directory of Rubbish Consumers and Buyers in Tanzania. Right now we are very busy with furthering our project and helping the citizens of Matemwe, so check the website often to see what exciting things we are up to.
