Human Wildlife Conflict

Successful conservation often leads to growing wildlife populations.

This, in turn, increases human-wildlife conflict over resources.

Honeyguide’s primary focus is Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC), as this poses the greatest threat to both people and livelihoods in the communities where we work.  Through targeted mitigation strategies that reduce crop damage, livestock loss, and risks to human safety, we protect communities while promoting coexistence.

The highest economic cost to local communities is often the result of Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC), specifically from wildlife such as elephants raiding crops

We directly address this crisis by providing communities with practical toolkits and essential training, introducing innovative, scalable solutions, and adapting our approach based on rigorous evidence of what works.

Our approach to Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) is centered on developing a cost-effective, practical, and locally owned method and toolkit that is community-led and scalable. We recognize that as wildlife populations grow, particularly elephants, HEC escalates, and the resulting crop losses often represent the highest economic impact on communities.

The approach works by developing and implementing site-specific solutions that strengthen livelihoods and security, while fostering greater tolerance for wildlife. This mitigation strategy ultimately strengthens the relationship between communities and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

Training teams

We build the capacity of local communities to protect their crops by implementing a community-led farm protection model through direct training and the provision of essential toolkits.  We train volunteer crop protection teams from the local community, equipping them with comprehensive toolkits of proven deterrents: flashlights, sirens, airhorns, chili crackers, and Roman candles. These teams are trained in HEC mitigation techniques, strengthening their ability to manage conflicts independently.

New Tools and Ideas

Homegrown solution to Human-Elephant Conflict. Our Innovation & Efficiency team turns real field challenges into practical, low-cost solutions. From creating breakthrough Human–Wildlife Conflict tools like the Noise Ball to redesigning systems that cut costs and boost impact, we build and test ideas that help communities protect wildlife—and thrive—using smart, affordable innovation

Noisy Balls

The “Noise Ball”  is a low-cost, reusable device introduced by Honeyguide in 2024 to help farmers in Tanzania and Namibia protect their crops from elephants. Using a high-pitched siren and flashing LEDs to safely deter elephants, it’s built from local materials, runs on a rechargeable battery, and costs under $45.

After achieving a 95.6% success rate in Tanzania and sharply reducing crop raids, the solution expanded to Namibia, requiring just two units per farm and offering a practical, scalable tool for reducing human-wildlife conflict.

Our Community-Powered HWC Solution

The Problem

Escalating Crop Loss

Elephants are highly intelligent and adapt quickly to old deterrents, leading to significant and persistent economic losses for farmers. This ultimately erodes their willingness to support conservation.

Our Focus

Innovation and Aversion Conditioning

We continuously refine and upgrade our interventions based on research and development. We focus on non-lethal aversion conditioning, training elephants to associate farmlands with negative experiences, which changes their long-term behavior and reduces conflicts.

The Problem

Lack of Local Tools and Capacity

Traditional methods are often expensive or ineffective. Communities require an affordable, successful HWC approach that is scalable, practical, and locally owned.

Our Focus

The HWC Toolkit and Training

We empower communities by equipping volunteer crop protection teams with a comprehensive, low-cost toolkit and site-specific solutions. This includes a tiered approach of deterrents, from non-aggressive methods to stronger measures: LED Flashlights, Air Horns, Chili Crackers, Roman Candles, and innovative tools like the Noise Ball

HWC HANDBOOK

The Human-Elephant Conflict Handbook is a comprehensive guide to crop protection from elephant raiding.

It was developed in partnership with the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and is available in multiple languages to facilitate widespread use of community-led deterrence methods.

Available Languages: English, Portuguese, French, and Swahili

Q&A

Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) is the primary focus because it poses the greatest threat to both people and livelihoods in the communities where Honeyguide works. Furthermore, elephants are being killed through HWC more often than through poaching, creating a critical crisis for both conservation and community stability that requires direct and innovative intervention.

Honeyguide empowers communities by providing a comprehensive, low-cost HWC Toolkit and Training to volunteer crop protection teams. This includes a tiered approach of deterrents such as LED flashlights, air horns, chili crackers, and Roman candles, along with innovative tools like the Noise Ball and advanced safety tools. Additionally, we standardize best practices through the Human-Elephant Conflict Handbook, which is available in multiple languages (English, Portuguese, French, Swahili) for consistent application.

The Noise Ball (also known as the “Jumbosonic”) is an innovative, affordable, and reusable device developed by Honeyguide. It successfully deters elephants by emitting a high-pitched siren and flashing LED lights to harmlessly disrupt their senses. It has demonstrated a high effectiveness (over 95% success rate) during testing, is made from locally sourced materials, and is a practical, low-cost (under $45), and scalable component of the HWC toolkit.
